Presentation of Varde Gymnasium

I Denmark you begin in infant school, when you are 6 years old. Hereafter you go to school for at least 9 years. This is the Danish primary and lower secondary school. Then you can go to 10th grade or join an upper secondary education. For example you can choose to attend High School, which is primarily for young people at the ages of 16-19 – just like us. You choose a line of studies, such as social studies, English and maths, which is our line. The school can offer 8 different lines.

At our High School we are app. 500 students distributed in 19 classes. At Varde High School it is an old tradition that the first graders are called frogs, the second graders are called donkeys and the third graders are called storks. The storks are “eating” the frogs (they are throwing water on them at special occasions), and they are feeling high and mighty. The donkeys are regarded as boring (they have a lot of homework, so they are sometimes much pressured). The frogs are stupid and inexperienced.

At the school the community is appreciated: We have the party committee Warwath (the old name of the town), whose members are democratically elected once a year choose. They throw the coolest parties, and the students are great supporters, so the parties can become even better! The school also has other unions, such as the Student’s Council, who fights for improvements at our school, Operation Dagsværk, which is a charity organisation, and Mercurius, which is the school paper.
