Denmark is a small country without mountains, which consists of a peninsula (Jutland), two main islands (Zealand and Funen) and an archipelago, all of which are gathered in northern Europe. Our native language is Danish, but in school we learn more languages (e.g. English and German), and most of us are Christians. We have a monarchy, and our queen is at this time Margrethe II. Furthermore, we are a democratic country, and at the moment our Prime Minister is Anders Fogh Rasmussen (of the liberal party “Venstre”).
We have plenty of traditions and Christmas is one we especially look forward to. We celebrate it in the evening of the 24th of December when we among other things dance around the Christmas tree, eat duck and roast pork and unpack presents.
Most of you have probably heard about Hans Christian Andersen, who is one of the most famous writers of fairy tales in the world. Among other things he wrote The Little Mermaid which has inspired a statue, placed in Copenhagen. It is one of our most popular sights. In addition to this, we might mention Legoland which is a big amusement park made almost entirely from lego blocks.
In many ways we have adopted things from both England and USA, including fast food, music, fashion and language. However, we still hold on to our Danish nationality.
